Miller’s Jewelry

Coming Up In Virginia City. (1864-1882)

Miller’s Jewelry didn’t start in Bozeman. Instead, Miller’s was first established in Virginia City by Henry Pease during the 1864 gold rush. Henry made his living turning the raw minerals and yogo sapphires miners unearthed into gleaming treasures admired by all. Henry Pease would continue to create stunning jewelry—like our signature Montana yogo sapphire rings—until 1882 when he moved to Bozeman.

Incredibly enough, Miller’s Jewelry continues to use the original, handmade cabinets Henry Pease purchased and shipped up the Missouri to Fort Peck and up to Virginia City and then Bozeman via horse drawn carriage and train.

Moving to Bozeman (1882-1900)

Henry moved to Bozeman in 1882—that’s a full year before it’s incorporation! Henry Pease would go on to have a major influence on Bozeman’s development. He served as mayor in 1890, brought commerce to the town, and develop his jewelry store on Main & Tracy into a focal point of the downtown.

We certainly can’t claim to be the reason why Bozeman became a bustling center of commerce in the late 1800’s, but we do like to believe that Henry Pease helped!

Growing With the Town (1900-1952)

Miller’s Jewelry, then called  “Pease’s,” moved to 2E Main from their old location when it was sold. Henry Pease later began working with Claude Steffans, either his grandson or son-in-law (the jury is still out on that one). After several years of working together, Pease and Steffans went into business making Montana yogo sapphire rings, necklaces, and other jewelry until Pease fully transferred ownership of the store sometime between 1900 and 1940.

Jitter Bugging Through the 50s (1945-1988)

In 1945, Claude Steffans sold his Bozeman jewelry store to Harry Miller—our store’s namesake. Shortly afterward, in 1952, Harry Miller entered into a business partnership with Harold Mueller before stepping down.

Harold and Hellen (Morrow) Mueller kept the Miller’s Jewelry name because it so closely resembled their own—starting a long and proud tradition of associating professionalism with the name Miller’s Jewelry inside the Bozeman community.

Harold and Hellen would continue to run Miller’s Jewelry for 36 more years.

Mark & Kay

Keeping It Funky Into the 2000s (1988-2018)

Under Harold and Hellen’s stewardship, Miller’s grew in renown through Bozeman and the surrounding communities—drawing in customers from all around the state. After three decades of hard work providing jewelry services, Harold and Hellen could happily step away from the wonderful legacy they had built. In 1988, they sold the jewelry store to Mark & Kay (Sandquist/Johnson).

Again, Mark & Kay decided to retain the Miller’s Jewelry name—continuing the grand tradition Harold and Hellen had so kindly championed.
Cec & Jennie Opening Night

Passing The Torch (2018 - Present)

Jennifer & Cec (Mark & Kay’s son) became the official owners of Miller’s Jewelry unofficially in 2018 and officially in 2019. Cec grew up careening through Bozeman and Jennifer through Miami where her family owns JAE—a single family owner jewelry story in operation since 1945. That’s three generations of Horniks working with all manner of yogo sapphires, rubies and other precious gems. Jennifer and Cec met during their graduate studies in Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America. We like to call the union of Jennifer and Cec both a marriage and a merger!

The change in ownership also came with a move to 35W Main—a move that included installing a new jewelry showroom and moving our old cabinets (no simple task). The first cabinet took two people two hours to break down, even more time to cart through main street, and even more to put them together again! We’ll spare you the details, we'll just say that each pane of glass weighed 100lbs and the front panels required pulleys and crude steel counterweights to raise. It was an event! In 2019, Miller’s Jewelry had its grand re opening and we’ve been up and running since!
